Preparing Your Garden for an Adelaide Summer

30 November 2025 · 5 min read

Adelaide summers are hot and dry, and gardens that aren't prepared can suffer quickly. A little work in spring pays off through the toughest months.

Start with a good layer of mulch — 5 to 7 cm across garden beds. Mulch dramatically reduces evaporation, suppresses weeds and keeps roots cooler. It's the single best thing you can do for a low-water summer garden.

Check and adjust your watering. Deep, infrequent watering encourages strong roots, while light daily sprinkles do more harm than good. Water early in the morning to reduce evaporation.

Tidy up before the heat arrives: remove spent growth, weed thoroughly, and prune anything that needs it while plants are still actively growing. Come summer, you'll be glad it's done.
