Mulch is the single most effective thing you can do for a low-water Adelaide garden — but only if it goes down at the right time. Get the timing wrong and you miss most of the benefit.
The best window is mid to late spring (September to November), before the summer heat sets in. Mulching while the soil is still moist from winter rain locks that moisture in for the dry months ahead.
Lay it 5 to 7 cm thick across garden beds, keeping it a few centimetres clear of plant stems and tree trunks to prevent collar rot. Coarse organic mulches like bark, woodchip or sugarcane work well and break down slowly.
You can top up mulch again in autumn to insulate roots over winter and keep weeds down. If you'd rather skip the heavy lifting, our spring clean-up and mulching service takes care of it for you.
