Best Drought-Tolerant Plants for South Australian Gardens

← All tips

2 March 2026 · 5 min read

With hot summers and tight water restrictions, South Australian gardens do best with plants that can handle dry spells. Choosing the right species means less watering, less stress and a garden that still looks great in February.

Australian natives are a natural fit: kangaroo paw, grevillea, callistemon (bottlebrush) and westringia all cope well with heat and poor soils, while attracting birds and bees. Many flower for months with almost no care.

For structure and foliage, try lomandra, dianella and agave — tough, architectural plants that hold their shape year-round. Succulents and grasses fill gaps beautifully and need very little water once established.

Group plants with similar water needs together, mulch heavily, and water deeply but infrequently while they establish. After the first year, most water-wise gardens need only occasional deep watering through summer.
